Mining and Minerals

PNG ranks among the world’s top gold-producing nations, with confirmed reserves across gold, copper, silver, nickel, and cobalt. The sector operates under the Mining Act and is regulated by the Mineral Resources Authority. Investment pathways include exploration licences, mine development partnerships, and downstream mineral processing. The sector is PNG’s largest export revenue contributor.

Agriculture and Agro-Processing

Over five million hectares of arable land support production across coffee, cocoa, palm oil, vanilla, copra, fresh produce, and livestock. The sector combines established export commodities with significant import substitution potential in processed food and animal protein. Investment pathways span plantation development, processing facility construction, cold chain infrastructure, and contract farming platforms.

Energy

PNG holds substantial energy resources including natural gas, hydroelectric potential, geothermal capacity, and solar irradiance. The country is an established LNG exporter. Domestic electrification remains low, creating demand for generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. Investment pathways include independent power production, renewable energy projects, and energy distribution systems.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

PNG’s 2.4 million square kilometre exclusive economic zone is among the most productive tuna fisheries in the world. The sector supports both commercial harvest and aquaculture development. Infrastructure and Logistics

PNG’s infrastructure gap — across roads, ports, warehousing, cold chain, and logistics networks — represents both a development challenge and an investment opportunity. Demand for freight handling, storage, and last-mile distribution is growing with the economy. Investment pathways include port and terminal operations, warehousing, transport fleet development, and logistics technology platforms.

Tourism and Hospitality

PNG offers a distinctive tourism proposition built on cultural diversity, marine environments, highland trekking, and wartime heritage. The sector is at an early stage of commercial development, with limited accommodation and service infrastructure outside Port Moresby and a small number of provincial centres. Investment pathways include hotel and lodge development, eco-tourism operations, and aviation-linked tourism services.

Manufacturing and Industrial Processing

PNG’s manufacturing sector is nascent, with domestic production concentrated in beverages, basic construction materials, and food processing. Import dependency across consumer goods, packaging, and building materials creates defined opportunities for local manufacturing. Investment pathways include factory development, industrial estate participation, and joint ventures with existing domestic operators.

ICT and Digital Infrastructure

Digital connectivity in PNG is expanding but remains below regional benchmarks in coverage and speed. Mobile penetration is growing, and demand for data services, digital payments, and connectivity infrastructure is accelerating. Investment pathways include telecommunications infrastructure, data centre development, fintech platforms, and digital service delivery systems.
